The All England Lawn Tennis Club staged the first Wimbledon Championships in 1877 on Worple Road, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the world. As crowds grew beyond the original 8,000 capacity, the club moved to its current Church Road site in 1922 — where Centre Court has been the focal point of the tournament ever since.

The grounds now hold around 42,000 across the show courts and outer courts combined. Centre Court itself seats 14,979 and gained a retractable roof in 2009, with No.1 Court following in 2019 — ensuring play can continue regardless of weather, while preserving the all-natural grass surface that sets Wimbledon apart from every other Grand Slam.

Wimbledon has fiercely protected its traditions — natural grass courts, an all-white dress code, and royal patronage — even as the venue has modernised behind the scenes.

Southfields is the preferred Underground route during The Championships, with stewarded walking routes to the grounds.
