Kingsmeadow

Home of Chelsea FC Women

🏟️ Brief Description

Kingsmeadow is a compact and historic football stadium located in Kingston upon Thames, South West London. With a capacity of around 4,800, it is best known as the former home of Chelsea FC Women, as well as AFC Wimbledon during a key period of the club’s history.
The stadium delivers an intimate matchday experience where fans are close to the pitch, making it particularly well suited to women’s football, youth internationals, and domestic cup fixtures.

While smaller than many London venues, Kingsmeadow has played an outsized role in the growth of women’s football in England and remains a respected ground within the capital’s football landscape.

📝 History of Kingsmeadow

Kingsmeadow opened in 1989, originally built as a community-focused football ground. Over time, it became most closely associated with AFC Wimbledon, who played there from 2002 until 2020 following the club’s formation by supporters.

In 2017, Chelsea FC Women moved into Kingsmeadow after the club purchased the stadium, marking a major moment for women’s football in England. The move provided Chelsea Women with a permanent, professional home, helping drive attendances, visibility, and standards across the Women’s Super League.

During Chelsea Women’s time at Kingsmeadow, the club enjoyed an era of domestic dominance, winning multiple WSL titles, FA Cups, and League Cups, while also competing regularly in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Although Chelsea Women have since transitioned to playing selected matches at Stamford Bridge and Kingsmeadow is no longer their primary venue, the stadium’s legacy as a catalyst for the professionalisation of the women’s game remains firmly intact.
