Ally Pally
Alexandra Palace, affectionately known as “Ally Pally”, is one of London’s most distinctive and versatile venues. Set on a hilltop in North London, it offers sweeping panoramic views across the city while hosting a wide range of events including live music, exhibitions, festivals, and major indoor sporting tournaments.
With flexible layouts allowing capacities of up to 10,400, Alexandra Palace is especially famous for staging globally televised sports such as the PDC World Darts Championship, Masters Snooker, and other international indoor events.
Its combination of Victorian architecture, parkland surroundings, and modern event infrastructure makes it unlike any other venue in the capital.
Alexandra Palace first opened in 1873, originally built as a grand public entertainment space and cultural centre, earning the nickname “The People’s Palace.” Just days after opening, it was destroyed by fire, only to be rebuilt and reopened later that same year.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the palace hosted exhibitions, concerts, and sporting events, gradually becoming a fixture of London’s social life. One of its most important contributions came in 1936, when the BBC broadcast the world’s first regular high-definition television service from Alexandra Palace — a milestone that permanently cemented its place in broadcasting history.
A second major fire in 1980 caused extensive damage, leading to a long period of restoration. After reopening in stages during the 1990s and 2000s, Ally Pally re-emerged as a premier events venue. Today, it balances historic preservation with modern staging, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for sport, culture, and entertainment.
