The Valley is the historic home of Charlton Athletic FC, located in Charlton, South East London. With a capacity of just over 27,000, it is one of the capital’s classic football grounds, known for its steep stands, close-to-the-pitch sightlines, and traditional matchday feel.
Primarily hosting league and cup football, The Valley has also staged international fixtures and community sporting events, maintaining its reputation as a true neighbourhood stadium deeply embedded in local culture.
The Valley opened in 1919, built largely by Charlton supporters themselves after the club’s return from World War I. This fan-built origin has shaped the ground’s identity ever since, symbolising community ownership and resilience.
Charlton’s most turbulent period came in the 1980s, when financial pressures forced the club to leave The Valley and ground-share elsewhere. After years of campaigning by fans, the club triumphantly returned in 1992, a moment still regarded as one of the most powerful supporter-led victories in English football.
Since then, The Valley has undergone redevelopment and modernisation, expanding capacity and improving facilities while retaining its traditional character. It has hosted Premier League football, promotion campaigns, and some of Charlton’s most memorable modern moments.
