🗺️ Where to stay

The short version

The ArenA is not in Amsterdam as most visitors picture it — it sits in Zuidoost, eight kilometres south-east of Centraal, in a purpose-built district of offices and arenas. That gives you a clean choice. Zuidoost is minutes from the turnstiles and has real hotels. The centre is where you actually want to be all the other hours of the trip. Amsterdam Zuid splits the difference. Everything below is the detail.

Amsterdam Zuidoost — on the doorstep

Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA station is a short walk from the ground, and the district was built around the arena, so unlike most of this cluster there are genuine hotels within minutes of the stadium.

It is efficient rather than charming: business hotels, wide boulevards and a shopping centre. Excellent for the match and for a fast exit, much less so for an evening. It is also very well connected — the train from Schiphol takes around a quarter of an hour.

The centre — where the trip actually happens

The canal belt, Jordaan and the streets around Centraal are why people go to Amsterdam, and the ArenA is a straightforward train or Métro ride away on lines 50 and 54.

For a two-night away day this is almost always the right base: you are near the food, the bars and the museums, and the match is a simple out-and-back. The only cost is riding home with the crowd.

Amsterdam Zuid

Between the two, on the Métro and mainline network, with a calmer feel than the centre and better value than you might expect. Good if you want quiet nights and easy journeys in both directions.

Near Schiphol

Worth knowing about even though you are not flying: Schiphol is a major rail interchange, the ArenA is about thirteen minutes away by train, and the hotel cluster there is large and often cheaper than the centre. Purely functional, but useful when the city is full.

💰 What it costs

Why there’s no price on this page

Amsterdam is a small city with year-round demand, which makes it the least forgiving market in this cluster. A midweek Eredivisie fixture will not move rates on its own, but it does not need to — a conference, a festival or a long weekend can fill the city regardless of the football. Add a European night with a large travelling support and central availability disappears quickly.

Any “from” figure printed here would be stale the moment the fixture list moved, and it would tell you less than thirty seconds on a live search will. Two things hold true across dates: for a fixed-date, high-demand fixture, booking early beats hunting for a late deal; and flexing on area is almost always cheaper than flexing on date, because your travel is the expensive thing to move.

⏰ How many nights

One night, two, or a day trip?

Of the three cities here, this is the one where the answer is least ambiguous. Treat an Ajax away day as a two-night trip and plan from there.

💡 The general mechanics of a no-fly away day — journey times, through-booking and the current entry requirements — are all set out on the no-fly away days hub. This page sticks to Amsterdam.

🏆 League game vs European night

Not every fixture is the same booking

A domestic fixture is a relaxed booking. Amsterdam is busy but not full, and you can take your time comparing the centre against Zuid.

A European night changes it. The date is fixed months out, the visiting support arrives in volume, and because the city is compact the pressure lands on the same central streets everyone wants. Zuidoost and Schiphol hold availability longest, which is exactly why they are worth knowing about.

If you have a ticket and a train for a European fixture, book the room immediately. If not, take something cancellable now rather than hoping later.
