Ryder Cup 2027 from London →
Two teams of twelve players, one representing Europe and one the United States, contest twenty-eight matches across three days. Each match is worth a point, and a halved match splits the point. The first team to reach fourteen and a half points wins the cup outright.
The first two days are given to pairs formats. Foursomes sees partners alternate shots with a single ball, which is the most exposing format in golf — a poor shot leaves a partner in trouble. Fourballs has each player using their own ball with the better score counting, which produces lower scoring and more aggressive play.
The final day is twelve singles matches, every player from each team going out in a head-to-head. That structure guarantees the contest can turn dramatically on the closing afternoon, and it is why Sunday singles have produced the competition’s most famous collapses and recoveries.
There is no prize money. Players compete for nothing but the result, which in a sport organised almost entirely around individual earnings is a genuine anomaly and the root of the event’s intensity.
The team element changes the golf visibly. Players who spend the year competing alone are suddenly accountable to eleven others, matches are decided by holes won rather than by cumulative score, and a single hole can swing a match regardless of how the rest was played. Match play rewards aggression in a way stroke play does not.
The crowds are the other difference. Ryder Cup galleries are partisan, loud and organised in a way golf crowds never otherwise are, with chanting and singing throughout. That atmosphere is the single most commented-upon feature of the event, and it is the reason many people who follow no other golf watch this.
The 2027 Ryder Cup is staged at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, from 13 to 19 September 2027. Four build-up days run from the Monday, with the three days of competition falling on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It marks the centenary of the contest, which makes it a significant edition in the competition’s history, and it is the first Ryder Cup held in Ireland since 2006. Irish crowds have a strong reputation in golf, and a home European staging with a centenary attached is expected to be among the most heavily attended in the event’s history.
Team places are earned partly and chosen partly. A number of positions on each side are decided by qualification points accumulated over the preceding period, with the remainder filled by captain’s picks announced closer to the event.
That balance is deliberate and frequently contentious. Automatic qualification rewards consistent form across a long window, while the picks allow a captain to select for match-play temperament, pairing chemistry or current form that the points do not capture. Debate over who is picked is a fixed part of the build-up.
Attending means travelling to Ireland. Adare is in County Limerick in the south-west, reachable via Shannon or Dublin, and demand for accommodation across the region during a Ryder Cup week is extreme — planning is realistically a matter of a year or more in advance rather than months.
Tickets are allocated by ballot rather than general sale, opening well ahead of the event, with separate allocations for practice days and competition days. Practice days are cheaper and easier to obtain, and for a first visit they offer closer access to players than the competition rounds allow.
