Home of Queens Park Rangers
Loftus Road, officially known as MATRADE Loftus Road Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is the historic home of Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and one of London’s most atmospheric football grounds. Located in Shepherd’s Bush, West London, the stadium has a capacity of just under 19,000, making it one of the most compact professional football venues in the capital.
What Loftus Road lacks in size, it more than makes up for in intensity. With stands tight to the pitch on all four sides, the ground delivers a relentless, old-school matchday atmosphere that visiting teams often find uncomfortable. It primarily hosts league and cup football but has also staged international fixtures, community events, and non-football uses during its long history.
Loftus Road opened in 1904, originally built as a multi-sport ground before becoming QPR’s permanent home in 1917. Over the following decades, the stadium evolved alongside the club, gradually transforming into a four-sided football ground with minimal space between supporters and the playing surface.
The stadium experienced its most prominent era during QPR’s rise in the 1960s–1980s, including the club’s League Cup win in 1967 and a famous second-place finish in the First Division in 1976. Loftus Road later hosted European football during QPR’s UEFA Cup campaigns, further cementing its reputation as a hostile venue for visiting sides.
Despite multiple discussions about relocation, Loftus Road has remained QPR’s home, valued by supporters for its authenticity, central location, and intimidating matchday feel. While modernised in parts, it retains the character of a classic English football stadium.
